Essential Care Advice for Stylists & Clients
Caring for your Tom Gold hair extensions
Gentle detangling
Always start detangling from the tips and move upward, using an extension-safe brush or wide-tooth comb.
Both pros and clients should avoid yanking or brushing too roughly to reduce risk of breakage and invisible tension on the bonds.
Mindful washing
Use sulfate-free, extension-friendly shampoo and conditioner such as our recommended C‑30 Line. Massage gently at the roots and never tug at the bonds.
For stylists: teach clients the importance of rinsing thoroughly to prevent residue, which can weaken attachments and cause discomfort.
Temperature & drying
Lukewarm water is ideal. Always pat extensions dry with a towel, never rub or twist.
For busy clients: air-drying is gentle but make sure all bonds and roots are fully dry to avoid matting and scalp irritation.
Styling support
Keep styling tools away from the bonds, and use a heat protection spray. Encourage heat-free styles whenever possible, but reassure clients their extensions can still handle curls and waves with care.
Bedtime routine
Secure extensions in a loose braid or low ponytail before bed. For sensitive clients: a silk pillowcase can make a world of difference in preventing friction, tangling, and root tugging.
Washing frequency & the 48-hour rule
After installation, wait a full 48 hours before washing your extensions so the bonds can set fully and hold for longer.
Once you’ve passed this window, aim to wash just 2–3 times per week using an extension-friendly, sulphate-free shampoo such as our C‑30 to minimise stress on the bonds and extend the life of the hair.
Air drying Vs. blow drying
While air drying is gentle, it can actually weaken adhesive bonds if extensions are left damp too long.
The safest approach is to always blow-dry your extensions on a cool or low heat setting to fully dry the bonds and roots. This helps maintain adhesion strength and prevents matting or moisture-related issues overnight.
Never go to bed with wet extensions, always ensure they're completely dry, bonds and all.
For the best results, use a heat protectant spray before blow-drying to keep your extensions looking smooth and healthy
Daily moisture & hydration
Apply lightweight oil or serum 1-2 times daily (mid-lengths to ends only) to maintain softness and prevent dryness.
Avoiding product build-up
To keep your extensions soft, smooth, and secure, always rinse shampoo and conditioner thoroughly after washing, making sure there's no residue left behind. Accumulated product can cause stickiness, tangling, and even make bonds slip out of place.
For ongoing care, steer clear of products containing silicone, heavy oils, alcohol, or sulfates, especially near the bonds, as these ingredients can break down adhesives and impact extension longevity
Swimming & water activities
Swimming with extensions: wear a swim cap if possible, and rinse thoroughly with fresh water before and after swimming. Apply a leave-in conditioner for protection against chlorine and saltwater.
Long-term success
A regular professional maintenance schedule is the foundation of healthy, long-lasting extensions.
Book a Pre-bonded check-in every 6-8 weeks and a Tape refit every 8 to 12 weeks with your stylist, these visits are essential not just for repositioning and bond and tapes checks, but for catching any discomfort or damage early, before it becomes a bigger issue.
For stylists, these appointments are also a valuable chance to hear your client’s feedback, refresh aftercare advice, and ensure your work continues to deliver comfort and confidence at every stage.
Extra protection
Apply a small amount of protective serum to the ends, not the bonds, especially in high-friction zones or after swimming/exposure to sun and wind.
Professional removal
Always leave removal to the professionals. DIY removal risks hair breakage, severe matting, and even scalp trauma.
Real-world tips from stylists & clients
Address discomfort early
If extensions ever cause pain, headaches, or persistent discomfort, reach out to your stylist right away; don’t “tough it out.”
Small adjustments in technique can make all the difference
Prioritise consultation
Discuss lifestyle and styling goals before application: the right density, length, and method matter for both comfort and longevity, one size never fits all.
Set clear expectations
For both stylists and clients: expectation management is crucial. Extensions enhance, but require commitment to maintenance, honest feedback, and trust in professional advice.
Celebrate progress together
Celebrate little wins, fewer tangles, confident updos, healthy roots, these are the signs of great care and great collaboration.
Speak up, don’t settle
Great hair starts with honesty. If something isn’t right, comfort, style, or expectations, communicate openly with your stylist.
Stylists value feedback because adjustments, even small ones, can make the difference between liking and loving your look.
Make it a creative collaboration
Bring inspiration photos, lifestyle details, and any hair history to your consultation. The more your stylist understands you, the more they can personalise your extensions for wearability, confidence, and joy every day.
Trust professional guidance
Your stylist’s recommendations on method, hair type, or aftercare aren’t just routine, they’re rooted in years of hands-on experience. Trust their expertise to help you avoid pitfalls and get the safest, most beautiful results.
Stay flexible as life changes
Extensions should evolve with you. If your style, needs, or priorities shift, whether it’s length, colour, or density, talk it over at your next appointment. Being open to change ensures your hair always matches your lifestyle.
